Nolan delighted with Notts County’s performance in their victory over Crewe

Kevin Nolan was a happy man after watching his Notts County side record a 4-1 win over Crewe but felt the margin of victory could have been even greater.

Crewe actually took the lead after eight minutes through Shaun Miller but County then came to the party in front of a bumper crowd as Noor Husin equalised, midfielder Elliott Hewitt bagged a brace and Derby County loanee Mason Bennett got a late goal on his debut.

The result keeps the Magpies in the League Two automatic promotion spots – they are a solitary point above fourth-placed Mansfield – and Nolan believes the perfect blend of individual and team play paid dividends at Meadow Lane.

“I thought the lads were fantastic and they got exactly what they deserved,” he said. “It could have been a lot more with the chances they created.

“Some of the play at times was magnificent and some of the goals proved what the team possess.

“It is something I have known all along. They have that quality in them and they married individual brilliance with magnificent team play – at times, it was a real joy to watch.

“The third goal proved that. Thommo (Richard Thomas, assistant manager) works on that tirelessly on the pitch, about being patient and looking for the right opening.

“It is something that comes straight from the training ground and doesn’t happen by accident. We are hoping to see more of that.

“It was nice to see Mason come off the bench and grab a goal on his debut. The afternoon could not have got any better for us.”

Defeat leaves Crewe just two points above the drop zone and rather than blaming a large crowd of more than 17,000, Alexandra boss David Artell pinpointed a lack of decisiveness in both penalty areas as his team’s downfall.

“We have spoken about being ruthless in both boxes and with the amount of balls we had, we just weren’t ruthless enough,” said Artell.

“That wasn’t just in their box going forward but also our own defensively because I thought the second and third goals were soft.

“The size of the crowd did not matter and I didn’t think they were particularly vociferous because after half an hour you could have heard a pin drop.

“I would much rather play in front of 20,000 than two any day of the week, but the crowd does not impact the result.

“No matter how many people we play in front of, we have to be better at both ends of the pitch.

“It has to improve and we have Yeovil next week so we will find out. The only way it will get better is through hard work and practice.”
