Reports claim he lost his temper after being told to leave by some of the eight people he was riding with in the Ford Focus, because the car was too full.

And as he began to walk back to the four-star Hotel Cuatro Plazas in Casilda, the 57-year-old could be heard arguing and shouting at the police.

In a video taken by the driver behind Sampaoli's car, he said in his native tongue: "You make me walk two blocks, a**hole.

"You earn 100 pesos (£4.20) a month, idiot."

Police stopped the vehicle Jorge Sampaoli was travelling in at a traffic stop

And the man recording the fracas commented: "There's Sampaoli, look at him. At a police stop. He's becoming violent."

The incident is reported to have taken place at around 5.30am on Sunday morning, and his remarks have caused a storm in Argentina, with the video since going viral.

City councillor Federico Censi told local newspaper La Capital that officers allowed the car to process once the female driver passed a breath test, and other passengers left the vehicle.

La Capital have since claimed that Sampaoli's brother - Marcelo - rang the policemen on duty to offer his apologies over the incident.

Argentinian news outlet El Canciller posted the footage on Twitter, with the caption: "Sampaoli drunk and annoyed with the police? This video is doing the rounds."

There have already been calls from members of the public to remove the ex-Sevilla boss from managing the national side.

With Alejandro Ruiz writing in a comments section: "Shameful that a civil servant doing his job is denigrated like this. It pains me that this disgraceful man is going to represent our country in the World Cup next year."

Sampaoli took charge of La Albiceleste in June, and has won four of his eight games in charge - securing Argentina's passage into Russia next summer.

He guided Chile to Copa America glory in 2015, coincidentally beating his birth nation in the final on penalties.
