Van Dijk was a top target for the Reds in the summer but no deal went through.

Liverpool were forced into an embarrassing public apology to Southampton after being accused of tapping up the player.

He ended up staying put at St Mary's but could now be on the move in January.

Irish newspaper the Sunday World report Liverpool have made a major breakthrough in their pursuit of the Dutch defender.

It's claimed the Kop WILL now sign the 26-year-old in January after a structured payments deal which meets Saints' £70m valuation was thrashed out in the last week.

Van Dijk was left out of the Southampton squad for yesterday's 1-1 draw with Hudderfield.

Mauricio Pellegrino's side face Tottenham and Manchester United before the year is out and Van Dijk may well have played his last game for the club.

Pellegrino was grilled about his star defender's future after the game against the Terriers.

He said: "We know around Virgil there is a lot of speculation about him.

"We have to wait and see what will happen. I can't control this but we have to think of our games."

Jurgen Klopp will be delighted in he can get Van Dijk on board.

He watched his Liverpool side ship three goals to Arsenal in just five minutes on Friday night in a stunning 3-3 draw at the Emirates.

Van Dijk will also be available to play in the Champions League for the Reds in the second-half of the season.

Starsport understands Manchester City are also keen on the player, although they have their eyes on a summer deal for the ex-Celtic man.
