Lincoln boss Danny Cowley claims he was pelted with coins by Newport fans

Lincoln manager Danny Cowley says he was struck by coins thrown from the crowd during their 0-0 draw at Newport.

Exiles defender Mark O'Brien was shown a red card for a late challenge on Imps striker Matt Green, which sparked anger on the terraces of Rodney Parade.

Shawn McCoulsky saw a shot fly inches wide in the 16th minute, before Nathan Arnold almost put Lincoln ahead after a rapid counter-attack.

Matty Dolan almost found the net with a free-kick as the clock ticked past 80 minutes, but his effort brushed the cross bar on the way over.

Lincoln captain Luke Waterfall had a late chance to head the winner, but it ended 0-0 to keep Cowley's men in the play-off positions.

"It's a really good crowd and a great atmosphere, they really get behind their team, we were getting pelted verbally and physically," said Cowley.

"They were throwing coins at us, I've got about B#1.20 in my pocket now so I'll go and have a can of coke with that.

"But they were a partizan crowd fighting hard for their team and I respect that, but not the other bits.

"We didn't play well enough to win and that's what we're disappointed about. If you're soft here, you'll lose, if you come with a big ego, you'll lose.

"But we've got a really honest, hard-working group and physically competitive group so we knew we'd be OK in those areas.

"They probably had the better of the first-half, we didn't do as well as we have been doing offensively.

"Our attacking play was a bit short today, we didn't execute things technically well and our decision making wasn't as good as it should have been."

Newport manager Mike Flynn says he will weigh up an appeal against referee Brett Huxtable's decision.

He said: "I'm happy. I thought that was our best performance of the season.

"I thought we were the better team with 10 men, we were certainly the better team in the first half, and that's what these players are about.

"They are good players, they work hard, and they do not know when they are beaten - they were outstanding.

"I didn't think it was a sending off, not be a mile. It was a foul, a yellow card, I get that, but it was so far away from goal. It's silly.

"I'll have a look (at the challenge again) and speak to the club but probably (appeal against it).

"When you've got 10 men for 35 minutes, I would have taken a draw all day, but like I said, I thought the boys were the better team with 10 men.

"Lincoln made it tough but I can't say enough about the boys, they were outstanding, and I'm so proud of them."
