Sevilla star Steven N'Zonzi has been linked with a move to Everton
The Everton boss wants Nzonzi, who also played for him while he was in charge at Blackburn.
Big Sam even investigated whether the France-born player could be eligible for England on residential grounds, when he was briefly in charge of the Three Lions.
But the feeling at Goodison is that, as they currently have an abundance of midfielders, one must go out if Nzonzi, 28, comes in.
Ross Barkley, 24, is out of contract at the end of the season and a target for Tottenham and Chelsea.
But Everton could be made to consider offers for two summer signings by previous boss Ronald Koeman - Davy Klaassen, 24, and Gylfi Sigurdsson, 28.
Everton also have defensive and central midfielders in Morgan Schneiderlin, 28, James McCarthy, 27, Idrissa Gueye, 28, and Muhamed Besic, 25 - the roles in which Nzonzi operates.
Arsenal have also been strongly linked with a £35m move for Nzonzi.
Allardyce, meanwhile, is also in the market for a striker in January after the club sold Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United in the summer for £75m.
