AC Milan fans turn on Gigi Donnarumma with damning banner

Supporters of AC Milan this evening sent a message to goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, ahead of their side’s clash with Hellas Verona.

Saga

18-year-old shot-stopper Donnarumma is widely regarded as one of the most talented young players on the planet, and was heailly linked with a departure from the San Siro during the summer.

The likes of Manchester United, Juventus, PSG, Real Madrid and more were linked with big-money moves for the Italian international, but, in the end, despite the best efforts of agent Mino Raiola, Donnarumma stayed put, committing his future to Milan with a new contract following a summer of heavy spending from the club’s new owners.

Struggles

However, despite 11 new faces having been brought in, the Rossoneri have once again struggled to gain parity with Italy’s top sides this season, with the club already sitting a full 16 points behind Serie A leaders and fierce rivals Inter.

In addition, Vincenzo Montella has already been replaced by Gennaro Gattuso on the club’s bench.

Exit links

The poor start to the campaign made by Milan has led to fresh links with a departure for Gigi Donnarumma, with rumours abound in Italy over recent days that the teenager has set his heart on a move away.

Donnarumma himself has yet to comment on the situation, but this did not stop the Diavolo’s ruthless supporters from turning on their young shot-stopper this evening.

Ahead of their Coppa Italia tie with Hellas Verona, Donnarumma was jeered and whistled by the home crowd at the San Siro, with the following banner having also been held up:

Consoled

The abuse proved too much for a clearly emotional Donnarumma, with Leonardo Bonucci having to console the youngster in the Milan changing room ahead of kick-off:

Result

Despite the tension around the stadium, though, Milan sauntered to a 3-0 victory tonight thanks to goals from Suso, Alessio Romagnoli and Patrick Cutrone, with Donnarumma playing the full 90 minutes between the posts.
