Manchester United and City were involved in a tunnel bust up after the derby

The FA have launched an investigation into the clash following Sunday's Manchester derby.

Tempers flared in the tunnel after Manchester City's 2-1 win over United, resulting in Jose Mourinho getting covered in milk and City coach Mikel Arteta suffering a cut above his eye.

Reports claim bottles were thrown as Mourinho became involved in an altercation after taking exception to the loud music coming out of the visitor's dressing room.

But United have strongly denied Romelu Lukaku threw one of the bottles and claim Pep Guardiola's stars goaded Mourinho with their over-the-top celebrations.

United insist their manager did nothing wrong and that City captain Vincent Kompany was one of the main aggressors in the tunnel area.

The incident will increase the bad blood that exists between rival bosses Mourinho and Guardiola.

Referee Michael Oliver failed to include what happened in his match report but The FA have asked both clubs to provide them with their written observations.

They will wait to hear from both clubs before deciding whether any disciplinary charges should be brought against those involved.

Manchester United and City have until 5pm tomorrow to submit their formal observations to the FA.

Meanwhile, United star Ander Herrera has called on the Premier League to change its rules and allow players to challenge bookings in the wake of games.

Herrera was booked for diving following a challenge from Nicolas Otamendi, but remains convinced Oliver got it wrong and that he should be able to appeal.

The decision left Mourinho livid and Herrera said: "I think the penalty is amazing.

"He (Otamendi) didn't expect to arrive for the ball. I touched the ball first and he stamped on my foot.

"I think everyone saw it. Everyone can make mistakes too, also the referee, but I didn't deserve the yellow card.

"Now that is my fourth yellow card and that is a big problem for me because I want to play every game.

"In Spain, if you get something undeserved you can appeal and they take it out.

"That is one of the things that could improve the Premier League because it is an amazing thing, an amazing competition.

"In my opinion the organisation is the best in the world but it is a real shame that if you don't deserve a yellow card you cannot appeal afterwards.

"Hopefully one day that rule can change."
