Guardiola wears yellow ribbon in support of imprisoned Catalan politicians

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola wore a yellow ribbon on his jacket at the game against Arsenal to support Catalan politicians who have been put behind bars for pushing for independence.

The yellow ribbon is a symbol used by independence supporters to demand freedom for Jordi Cuixart and Jordi Sanchez, presidents of political groups Omnium and ANC, and other members of the Catalan government, who have been accused of sedition, rebellion and embezzlement.

Guardiola dedicated the win against Napoli at the Etihad Stadium to the two Jordis, and he returned to speak about the political situation in his pre-Arsenal press conferences.

"I hope that the politicians in prison can leave as soon as possible for their families," he said. "If it can happen to them then it can happen to us. For giving an opinion. People shouldn't be confused and think it couldn't happen to them, because it can."

"We cannot ignore that these eleven politicians or activists, who haven't hurt anyone, are in prison for asking to vote."

"Many things have happened but it's all because we wanted to vote, because we wanted a legal referendum. The solution is that the state and Catalonia should agree and we can have an agreed referendum. It's as simple as that."

"Until that happens, there will only be difficult solutions. At the end of the day, there are people in prison because their manifesto said that if they won they would hold a referendum. That's what has happened. It was in the manifesto."

"Now, for going to vote, they are in prison. Today, they are suffering. The only thing we wanted in this process was to vote."

"It's scary that we have gone so far back in the state of law," he added. "I hope that it can be corrected and that we can have democratic elections and that on December 21 they are clean, where we can express what we want. And that as soon as possible we can recover the institutions of and the Catalan parliament can return to what it was."

As well as the yellow ribbon, the former Barcelona coach wore the traditional poppy. All Premier League games have had a minute's silence and seen the poppy worn this weekend, which symbolises respect for all fallen and injured soldiers in combat.
