Albert Adomah's brace helps Aston Villa to comfortable win at Barnsley

Two goals from Albert Adomah and a first professional goal for Keinan Davis gave Aston Villa a first win in five matches as they defeated Barnsley 3-0.

Spirits were high at Oakwell as the Reds celebrated their 130th anniversary in front of 14,600 fans.

It was the home side who had the first clear-cut chance when full-back Jason McCarthy made a strong run into the box but had his shot well blocked by the sliding John Terry.

Moments later, Robert Snodgrass stormed down the right-hand side, cut inside and tried a low shot that was comfortably parried by goalkeeper Adam Davies at his near post.

Villa opened the scoring in the 19th minute when a long ball from the back led to a mix-up between Davies and a defender allowing Adomah to take it past both of them and poke into an empty net.

Villa youngster Davis was impressing and he nearly added to the scoreline as Snodgrass sent in a deep cross but he could only head it straight into the hands of Davies.

The Tykes went on to dominate the latter part of the half as George Moncur and Adam Hammill sent numerous crosses into the Villa penalty area. However, the partnership of James Chester and Terry proved too robust.

Barnsley were then punished when a Villa counter-attack sent Davis bursting into the box. Adam Jackson lunged and brought him down, giving referee Simon Hooper no choice but to point to the spot.

Adomah stepped up and although Davies guessed the right way, the winger's well-placed kick was too high for him.

Villa thought they had scored a third through Jonathan Kodjia immediately after the restart, but the linesman was quick to raise his flag.

Davis finally got his goal in the 55th minute when he met a delightful cross to tower over everyone and head the ball downwards. Davies got a touch but the ball trickled into the net to send the travelling fans wild.

Barnsley continued to struggle to break down Villa's robust defence and wasted a great chance in the 67th minute when substitute Ike Ugbo met a cross from Hammill but his header was straight at goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

Villa almost added another goal five minutes later when Matty Pearson was dispossessed by Davis and he sent a low cross into Adomah, but his poor touch guided the ball in the grateful hands of Davies.

Villa substitute Scott Hogan wanted in on the action and made his presence felt when he forced Davies into a good save one-on-one at the near post.

Barnsley wasted an even better chance when Ugbo was sent clean through into the box but six yards out and one-on-one with Johnstone, he somehow dragged his shot wide.
