Arsene Wenger still believes his Arsenal side can challenge for the Premier League
ARSENE WENGER insists Arsenal still have a squad capable of winning the title – although he did not sound too convinced.
Chief executive Ivan Gazidis sent an email to staff after the window closed with no further arrivals despite the sale of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to say: "At the end of the window, reviewing all activity, we have once again improved the depth and quality of the squad."
But when Wenger was asked to endorse that stance, he was rather less bullish in tone.
"I think we are strong enough, yes," he said. "Stronger than last season? It depends on what period of the season."
He was slightly more emphatic when asked if Arsenal could be title challengers.
"Yes," Wenger said. "Why not? Because we have played three games, and two of those were away games.
"Okay, we lost at Liverpool but we can redress the situation very well and very quickly."
Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe will not underestimate the "huge quality" of Arsenal with his side still seeking a point this season.
Despite all of the rumblings of discontent within the Gunners' camp, Howe knows just what damage a fully-focused Arsenal side can inflict.
"There's not just one player that you have to look out for, when you play a team like Arsenal it's a collective with huge quality in all positions," said Howe.
