Wolves win again on the road at Derby

Wolves ended a run of three defeats at Pride Park with a convincing 2-0 victory over Derby.

A deflected Barry Douglas strike gave them a first-half lead before Ivan Cavaleiro, who was sent off at Derby last season, finished a counter attack to secure Wolves' second victory of the new campaign.

Only poor finishing denied them an even bigger margin of victory while Derby offered little as they were beaten at home for only the second time in 19 League games.

Wolves had conceded 12 goals in their previous three visits to Derby but they had plenty of possession in the opening 20 minutes without really threatening.

It was the home side that created the first real opening in the 24th minute when Andreas Weimann, who spent last season on loan at Wolves, exchanged passes with Chris Martin before surging into the box only to be crowded out.

The visitors replied with a swift counter that ended with Matt Doherty sweeping in a low cross that Leo Bonatini fired wide at the near post in the 29th minute but they went ahead three minutes later.

It was another move down the right that led to the goal with Derby's defence failing to clear and Douglas pouncing on the loose ball to fire in a low shot that went in off Richard Keogh.

Derby were almost caught out again when Wolves got behind them on the left but this time the ball was put behind for a corner and Andre Wisdom had to head another cross behind as the visitors finished the half strongly.

The home side had to improve and they started the second half well with Curtis Davies heading over a free kick before Weimann played in Johnny Russell in the 48th minute but his low shot from 15 yards was turned behind by John Ruddy.

Derby were playing with greater urgency but they survived a double scare in the space of 60 seconds with Wolves squandering two great chances.

First Diego Jota ran clear through the middle in the 53rd minute only for Wisdom to make a superb recovering tackle and then Bonatini fired over an open goal after Jota's shot was tipped onto a post by Scott Carson.

Wolves had another chance in the 58th minute when Doherty went through after exchanging passes with Bright Enobakhare but fired into the sidenetting.

If Wolves thought those misses could come back to haunt them, their fears were eased in the 76th minute when they scored a classic breakaway goal.

Enobakhare played Jota in and he slipped the ball square to Cavaleiro to finished from three yards to seal an impressive Wolves victory.
