The centre-back will become Manchester United’s first summer signing after they agreed a deal with Benfica this weekend.

United will pay around £30million for the 22-year-old.

Lindelof will be in action for Sweden tonight against Norway and will head to Manchester tomorrow morning.

Jose Mourinho is hoping to follow him up with a new striker with Alvaro Morata now his first choice.

United have held talks with Real Madrid for Morata and hope he will be in Manchester for a medical by the end of the week.

But the Lindelof deal will be concluded first as Mourinho looks to shore up his defence.

The deal will bring Chris Smalling's future back into doubt after the England defender was publicly criticised by Mourinho during the season.

Manchester United are keen to partner Lindelof with Eric Bailly, who joined for £30m last summer from Villarreal.

Mourinho was critical of his defence during the season with Smalling, Phil Jones and Luke Shaw coming under fire.

But the Portuguese has moved to improve his options early in the window of a summer where his spending could top £200m.

Last year Mourinho signed four players and spent £150m with Paul Pogba breaking the transfer record at £89m.

While an individual deal is unlikely to top that fee now Antoine Griezmann is off the table, the total spending could.

Mourinho is in the market for two strikers with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney to leave.

Morata should be the first and Andrea Belotti of Torino could be the second.

Elsewhere United are looking to add to their creativity in midfield with James Rodriguez and Ivan Perisic linked with moves.

However Griezmann has finally put an end to any chance of moving to United this summer by signing a new contract with Atletico.

Griezmann was Mourinho's first choice striker coming into the summer and today he apologised for flirting with the idea of a move away from the La Liga side.

"The first thing that I want to do is apologise to the people who misunderstood my statements," he said after penning a one-year extension.

"Maybe I expressed myself badly or someone wanted to make news where there weren’t any, but since I came, I have given my all for my club, my teammates and my coaching staff, and I’m very happy to live one more season with all of you."

He added: "I will thank them all by giving my best on the pitch, as always."
