Inter Milan caretaker boss Stefano Vecchi targets much-needed win against Lazio

Inter Milan caretaker boss Stefano Vecchi has targeted a positive end to a difficult season, but admits his players are struggling to cope with their poor run of form.

Inter have lost six of their last seven games, including a 2-1 home defeat to Sassuolo in what was Vecchi's first match in charge since replacing the sacked Stefano Pioli earlier this month.

However, Vecchi believes he saw signs of improvement in training this week ahead of Sunday's trip to Lazio, who will be looking to make certain of a place in next season's Europa League.

"The team demonstrated during the week that they do not want to finish the season in this way," Vecchi said in quotes reported on the club's website. "It was a better week than the previous one; the players have got used to our way of doing things.

"From a physical point of view, the team has done what's been asked of them. Right now the players are finding it hard from a mental standpoint to get out of this run they're on.

"It's been a tricky season and we need to try and finish it well. Now it's up to me to motivate this group of players and try to bring this season to a close in the best way possible.

"Of course, we have to produce more - we're Inter. All our games are tough at the moment, even more so against a team like Lazio, who have nothing to lose and have real quality.

"The club's management are aware of how difficult this situation is, they're backing us. I know that my staff and I are valued and we share in the responsibility for being in this situation."

Lazio will look to shake off the disappointment of their defeat to Juventus in the Coppa Italia final and boss Simone Inzaghi is not taking anything for granted, despite the poor form of Sunday's visitors to the Stadio Olimpico.

"We have two games left that we will face in the best way possible," Inzaghi told a pre-match press conference. "We are not yet sure of fourth place.

"Inter will be here to win this match, but this team has always been on track and never taken any game for granted. We have always approached the challenges in the right manner."
