Jurgen Klopp hits back at the Neville brothers after Loris Karius criticism

JURGEN KLOPP launched an astonishing attack on Gary Neville as the row over Loris Karius’s form rumbles on.

The Liverpool boss furiously responded to the former Manchester United captain’s claims about his keeper ahead of his side’s trip to Middlesbrough.

Klopp questioned why Neville is used as an expert on TV when he was sacked as manager of Valencia after just four months in charge earlier this year, and also hit out at his brother Phil.

But he would not confirm if the under-fire Karius, a £4.7m summer signing from Mainz, would start at the Riverside tomorrow.

Klopp said: “The pundits, former players most of them, forgot completely how it felt when they got criticised.

"Especially the Neville brothers; the one who was the manager he obviously should know that too much criticism never helps.

"But he is not interested in helping a Liverpool player I can imagine, but that makes the things he says not make more sense.

"He showed he struggled with the job to judge players so why do we let him talk about players on television?”

Neville, who initiated the tit-for-tat row by claiming Karius “transmits anxiety” through the Liverpool team, replied on Twitter, saying: Haha, I’m not a chef but I know a good steak.”

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher also said Karius should “shut up” as he questioned whether the German is up to being the No1 at Anfield, before getting in a row on social media with former team-mate Dietmar Hamann on the issue.

Neville’s brother Phil continued the debate in his role as a TV pundit on Sunday night after Karius’s qualities were called into question following the Reds’ 2-2 draw with West Ham.

Klopp said: “I don’t listen to them. I am pretty sure Carra doesn’t speak too positively about Man United players.

"Obviously the Neville brothers don’t like Liverpool. I have no problem and if they can cause bigger problems then we have already they have tried.

"By the way, you can tell him I am not on Twitter so if he wants to tell me something Twitter doesn’t help.”

Klopp refused to talk about Karius’s form directly after his positioning for Dimitri Payet’s free-kick and his reaction for Michail Antonio’s goal was called into question following the West Ham draw.

That followed the keeper spilling a low shot at the end of last weekend’s clash with Bournemouth that gave Nathan Ake an easy finish to earn the Cherries a 4-3 win.

When asked if Karius would keep his place for tomorrow, the Liverpool boss said: “No answer for this.

"Everything I say creates a story. If I say he plays, it’s this, if I say no, it’s this. There is absolutely no answer.”
