Chapecoense add two stars to club crest following Colombian air disaster

Brazilian club Chapecoense have announced that they have added two stars to their crest.

The club were struck by tragedy last week as 19 of their players died when a plane carrying the team crashed in Colombia. Members of the coaching staff and journalists also died.

Chapecoense were due to play in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final against Atletico Nacional the day after the crash but the fixture was suspended indefinitely.

It was subsequently confirmed that CONMEBOL awarded the trophy to Chapecoense, after a request from Atletico Nacional, with the club marking the victory by adding a large star above their badge.

In addition, another smaller star has been added on the club's badge out of respect for those who lost their lives in the plane crash.

Chapecoense explained: "The first star refers to being crowned champions of the Copa Sudamerica 2016. It's white to represent peace. The peace found by our eternal champions. The colour white also represents the light that will guide us forward.

"The second star inside the letter F - which stands for football - is the subtle, yet impactful, way to immortalise those who dedicated their lives to Chapecoense."

The club will now have to re-build, with there only being 16 players in their current squad.

Many teams from around the world have paid tribute to the victims of the plane crash by holding a minute's silence before games over the past week.
