Faroe Islands 0 - 6 Portugal: Andre Silva bags first-half hat-trick as Portugal win well in the Faroe Islands

Andre Silva notched a first-half hat-trick as Portugal strolled to a 6-0 win against the Faroe Islands in Torshavn.

Silva punished sloppy defending from the hosts with a 12th-minute strike and 22nd-minute header before completing his treble by adding a side-footed effort eight minutes prior to the break.

Cristiano Ronaldo then got in on the act in the 65th minute, cracking the ball in from the edge of the box, and Portugal's second 6-0 triumph in just a few days was wrapped up in stoppage time by goals from substitute Joao Moutinho and Joao Cancelo.

The two sides went into this World Cup European Qualifying Group B match with the Faroe Islands lying second, a point and a place clear of Portugal, having opened their campaign with a draw against Hungary and victory over Latvia.

But any thoughts of Fernando Santos' European champions - who beat Andorra 6-0 on Friday - having an uncomfortable time of it on their opponents' artificial pitch were quickly dispelled.

Portugal went ahead when Sonni Nattestad made a poor attempt at trying to cut out Joao Mario's pass and the ball ran through to Silva, who finished in composed fashion past goalkeeper Gunnar Nielsen.

The home side then let themselves down again as Atli Gregersen's interception of a Ricardo Quaresma cross only sent the ball bouncing off Nielsen to tee up Silva for a simple header.

Silva scored his third when he followed up after Nielsen, who possibly should have done better, parried a strike from Cancelo.

As Portugal's utter dominance continued into the early stages of the second half, Ronaldo, scorer of four against the Andorrans, registered his 66th international goal by firing past Nielsen having exchanged passes with Joao Mario.

Moutinho made it 5-0 in the closing stages with a superb, guided finish set up by fellow substitute Gelson Martins, who also then provided the through-ball for Cancelo to slot past Nielsen.

Portugal are up to second in the group, with the Faroe Islands dropping to fourth.
