Mats Hummels is back with Bayern Munich after eight years playing for Dortmund
Mats Hummels is looking forward to beginning his second stint with Bayern Munich after putting pen to paper on a five-year deal.
Hummels was revealed as a Bayern player nearly two weeks ago, but delayed the formalities of signing his new contract as they were playing his former club Borussia Dortmund in the German Cup final on Sunday.
The 27-year-old started his youth career with the Bavarian club but made only one first-team appearance before leaving for Dortmund in 2008, first on loan and then signing a permanent deal.
Hummels became a huge favourite at the Westfalenstadion and stayed loyal to Dortmund despite regularly being linked with clubs in the Premier League.
But he now becomes the third major Dortmund star to leave for Munich, following in the footsteps of Mario Gotze in 2013 and Robert Lewandowski 12 months later after the clubs agreed a £31.5m fee.
"The departure from Dortmund was, of course, very difficult for me, like in 2008 when I made my way in the other direction," he said.
"Now I'm just happy about everything that awaits me at Bayern."
Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rumenigge added: "We are pleased to welcome Mats back at Bayern.
"With his signing, we have not only a defender of world-class standing, but also a player who is not afraid to take responsibility and, moreover, comes from our academy."
