Barnsley dropped out of the League One play-offs following a 2-0 defeat at home to Southend United.

Jack Payne scored inside five minutes and Michael Timlin added a second in stoppage time, leaving the hosts ruing a slow start and missed chances at Oakwell.

After just four minutes Payne was set free in the box and turned past a defender before finishing low into the left corner with his weaker right foot.

Barnsley had the chance to draw level from the spot as Daniel Bentley brought down Ashley Fletcher after the Manchester United loanee broke in on goal.

Tykes captain Conor Hourihane stepped up but dragged the penalty wide to Bentley's left.

The second half was a cagier affair with chances at a premium as Southend kept men behind the ball.

Fletcher scuffed a shot from six yards out after good work in Barnsley's midfield. Later, Marley Watkins headed wide despite being unmarked at the back post.

Timlin finished the job for Southend with a first-time strike from 25 yards out which flew past Adam Davies and into the top corner.
