Santiago Canizares wants Gary Neville to resign & apologise to Valencia

Valencia legend Santiago Canizares has called on Gary Neville to resign and apologise to the club’s supporters.

Neville has endured a torrid time at the Mestalla and oversaw an embarrassing 7-0 defeat at the hands of Barcelona on Wednesday night.

Canizares – who spent a decade at Los Che before hanging up his boots in 2008 – labelled the ignominious result as “the worst” he can remember, comparing it to similar thrashings back in 1993 and 1995.

And in the wake of the thrashing the former goalkeeper has called on the Valencia boss to step down from his post after going eight games without a win in La Liga since taking charge at the start of December.

'
'The VCF defeat today is the worst I have known since I have had use of reason,” he wrote on Twitter.

'
'And the manner of it means it can’t be compared to Karlsruhe [7-0 in 1993] or Salamanca [4-0 in 1995].

''I was hoping for a resignation from the coach, as well as some apologies. I may be ignorant, but I’m surprised he didn’t. I thought he was honest.”

The former Spain international vented his frustration on social media and wrote a total of eight tweets dissecting the defeat and is clearly upset at the current situation at the Mestalla.

A hat-trick from Lionel Messi and four from Luis Suarez deemed the second leg pretty redundant as Barcelona put more than one foot in the final of the Copa del Rey.

Valencia will have to face the same opposition once again next Wednesday, welcoming Luis Enrique’s men to their own turf where support for Neville could be at an all-time low.

Neville is still without a single win in La Liga in his first proper managerial role but will be hoping to turn things around this weekend when his side travel to Real Betis, who themselves haven’t won in the league since November 27th, a whopping 10 games ago.
