Mascherano sent down for tax fraud

Javier Mascherano has accepted a one-year prison sentence for defrauding Spain's tax authorities of 1.5 million euros, although he has requested that it be suspended or substituted with a 21,600 euro fine. The Barcelona court hearing the case also handed the Barca man an 815,000 euro fine and banned him from receiving any state subsidies or tax benefits whilst serving the sentence.
The Argentine footballer's lawyers requested that the court substitute the custodial sentence with a 21,600 euro fine, a move which would see the charges struck from the player's record.
The Prosecutors' Office supported the request, but not the State Prosecutor, who agreed to suspend the prison sentence - as it is his first offence and less than two years -, but opposed commuting it for a fine.
