Montpellier 1 - 0 Caen - Hilton header boosts Montpellier

Hilton's early header earned Montpellier a narrow 1-0 victory in their Ligue 1 clash with Caen at Stade de la Mosson on Sunday.

The Brazilian defender made sure the hosts bounced back to winning ways following last weekend's 1-0 reverse at Toulouse as they moved up to seventh in the standings.

The defeat leaves Patrice Garande's outfit in 13th after collecting just four points from their last six league matches.

Montpellier did not need long to register their first goal of the game which came four minutes in.

Anthony Mounier found Hilton from a corner and La Paillade's skipper rose highest to glance a header beyond Remy Vercoutre.

The hosts continued to press and, after Lucas Barrios and Bryan Dabo combined to tee up Kevin Berigaud, it looked like the former Evian striker was about to add a second but for Nicolas Seube's last-ditch block.

Caen offered a response and Dennis Appiah almost caught out Geoffrey Jourdren with a cross-shot but Montpellier's stopper got down well to beat the ball away at his left post.

Rolland Courbis' side could easily have doubled their lead before the interval when, on the counter, Mounier found Barrios but the Paraguayan's looping header bounced off the top of the bar after Vercoutre chose to leave it.

Caen did little to stem the tide in the second half and Vercoutre was called upon twice in quick succession, firstly to keep out the lively Barrios before Jonas Martin tested him with a left-footed effort from 16 yards.

The wet weather was playing havoc with the pitch surface and Montpellier could easily have been out of sight by 70 minutes, but Barrios and Mounier both failed to take advantage of a loose backpass that got stuck in a puddle before Dabo slipped over as he was about to pull the trigger.

Caen managed to apply some pressure in the latter stages but Herve Bazile could only fire into the side-netting after Jourdren punched a free-kick delivery into his path.

Sloan Privat had a chance to steal a point for the visitors minutes from the end but his powerful drive was parried well by Jourdren and Montpellier held on to claim all three points.
