Messi did not feature in Argentina's friendly with Ecuador due to an injury to his right foot.
According to 'La Cope', Leo's foot is swollen and he was unable to put on his boot.
"We waited for Messi until the end but he was in no fit state to play. He had a hard time putting his boot on. His foot hurts a lot", said Argentina boss, Gerardo Martino.
Messi has been carrying the injury since the Champions League game against Manchester City. He does not know if it was a knock or a twist, but he has been in pain since then.
The Argentine pushed to be fit to face Real Madrid four days later and he played the full ninety minutes in pain. He had a scan when he touched down in Washington but that failed to detect an injury, despite the persistent pain and swelling.
