Granada CF vs Getafe preview - Lago targets win for Contra

Getafe defender Roberto Lago hopes his team can give Cosmin Contra the perfect send off by beating Granada in what is expected to be the Romanian coach's final match in charge of the Madrid club.

Chinese club Guangzhou R&F released a statement during the week naming Contra as the successor to Sven Goran Eriksson.

Getafe's president Angel Torres has confirmed that an offer has been made for Contra, but refused to confirm whether the coach had accepted, and the club have not put out an official statement yet regarding the coach's future.

Contra avoided questions on the matter in his press briefing before the trip to Granada, insisting "the most important thing now is the Granada match", but Lago revealed in a separate press conference that he expects the coach to leave.

"If in the end he does leave, which seems to be likely, then it would be great for the coach to leave with a win and a good performance so he leaves the team in the best possible way," said Lago, quoted in Marca.

The full-back also praised the impact Contra has had on the club since succeeding Luis Garcia in March of this year - steering the club away from the relegation zone last season and leading them to their current position of 13th in the table this term.

"Last year people were saying that the team was lacking spirit, hope and the will to win, to move up the table and improve every day. Cosmin imprinted that character on us, that enthusiasm and hunger that perhaps we were lacking before," said Lago.

Former Atletico Madrid coach Quique Sanchez Flores is reported to be the frontrunner to replace Contra, which would see him return to the team's dugout after taking charge of the club for the 2004-05 season. Regardless of who takes over, Lago is also confident that the team will not run into trouble.

"If the coach leaves, the players will be committed to the new one, those that haven't been playing as much will want to prove what they can do, and that's good for the team's competitiveness. I think the team is in better shape than in previous years. The team is united and everyone respects each other."

Getafe's only doubt for the match with Granada is Sergio Escudero, but Joaquin Caparros' side have a total of six players unavailable as they search for their first win in 13 league games, the longest they have gone without tasting victory since returning to the top flight in 2011.
