FREAKED OUT: Balotelli is afraid to go to his bathroom at night

The Liverpool striker is terrified to go to the toilet at night in case he stumbles over one of the monsters.

Mario, 24, cannot believe how much the creepy-crawlies have grown in the two years since he last played here for Manchester City.

A Liverpool FC source revealed: “They are so big they make him jump when he sees one.

"He says he finds them at his home and freaks out every time.

"Mario is a big tough guy and he is not usually scared of spiders but he’s scared to go to the bathroom at night now in case he switches on the light and sees a big hairy one staring back at him.’’

Experts say the spiders have grown much bigger than normal this year because of the unusually warm autumn.

Some of the more aggressive species have even started giving unsuspecting people nasty and painful bites.

One victim described it as “like being stabbed with a nail”.

Celebrity therapists Nik and Eva Speakman have helped stars like Holly Willoughby, 33, and Kym Marsh, 38, conquer various fears in the past.

Now they are running counselling sessions to help people overcome arachnophobia.

They have been deluged with inquiries since the spiders began moving indoors as summer draws to an end.

Pop star Lily Allen, 29, emerged yesterday as the latest famous victim of the monster spider plague. Her husband Sam Cooper, 36, shared a snap of a giant spider at their home in Cranham, Glos, saying: “They’re coming... #spiderinvasion.”

Darren Driscoll also told how he came face-to-face with a huge green-fanged tube-web spider when he poked at a funnel-shaped cobweb outside his home.

The dad-of-three, an IT worker from Plymouth, said: “It was a really aggressive little thing, no fear at all.

"I poked at the web with a blade of grass and it charged straight out and snatched the grass off me. I hope it doesn’t get inside my house.”

The bites of tube-web spiders are non-fatal but they can cause a sharp pain lasting for hours.
