Angel di Maria was happy to be given the No.7 shirt at Manchester United by Louis van Gaal and has insisted he is well aware of the importance of it because of talking with Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of his move to Old Trafford.
After being left vacant for a season following Antonio Valencia relinquishing the shirt, Di Maria steps into the star No.7 void that has been empty since Ronaldo left back in 2009.
Like Ronaldo, Di Maria has been given the No.7 before he has played a game at United but there is a real air of confidence that Di Maria can follow in the footsteps of Ronaldo.
Speaking at his first press conference today, Di Maria said: “I was aware of the importance of the number 7 shirt. Ronaldo spoke to him about the importance. I hope I can live up to it.”
Michael Owen and Valencia were both underwhelming No.7′s at United in comparison to the likes of Eric Cantona, David Beckham and George Best who had held the shirt before them.
Now, the Argentinian has brought glamour back to the shirt and fans will be hoping the can live up to the expectation brought on him by a £59.7m price tag.
