Football fan Rihanna cheered on the ultimately-successful German team from her position in the stands, also showing her loyalty to host nation Brazil by sporting a body-painted Brazilian flag on her neck.

Earlier in the day the Barbadian singer had pledged her support to the victorious team, posting a digitally enhanced picture on her Instagram account of herself, appearing to wear a German flag bathing suit, whilst on the pitch in the Brazilian capital.

And Rihanna was in great company as she watched the two teams battle it out for the World Cup victory. Columbian singer Shakira set the festivities on fire, with an energetic performance of "La La La (Brazil 2014)" before the game, alongside Carlos Santana, Wyclef Jean, and her little boy Milan, 17 months, who she brought onto the stage to enjoy the atmosphere.

Supermodel Bundchen played two roles on the big night night: she presented the 2014 FIFA World Cup trophy, in its Louis Vuitton case, prior to the match, and then moved to the stand where she watched the action with husband Tom Brady.

Fellow celebrities Ashton Kutcher, David Beckham, James Bond star Daniel Craig, Adriana Lima, Taylor Kitsch, Sarah Hyland and boyfriend Matt Prokop were also in the audience for the sporting highlight.

Back at home, there were many more big names watching the game from the comfort of their own living rooms. At the moment that Germany scored the winning goal against Argentina, a new twitter record was set with 618,725 tweets per minute being sent.

Stars including Shannen Doherty, Wilmer Valderrama, Ryan Seacrest and Pete Wentz were amongst the voracious tweeters, posting their thoughts as the football finale took place.

"The more they play, the more I eat #worldcup," TV host Seacrest wrote.

"This was 1 of my most exciting #WorldCup I have seen in my life.. My love to all the teams for leaving it all on the field. #WorldCup2014," wrote Demi Lovato's beau Valderrama.
