STEPPING UP: Tim Sherwood has been told he will get the chance to turn Tottenham's season around

Interim manager Sherwood is set to land the role as long as Spurs respond to his leadership against West Ham tomorrow in the Capital One Cup and at Southampton in the league on Sunday.

But Spurs are also keeping a close eye on the situation of ex-England boss Fabio Capello, who was at White Hart Lane on Sunday for the 5-0 thrashing by Liverpool that spelt the end of Andre Villas-Boas’ reign.

The Italian, 67, is currently in charge of Russia, who have qualified for the World Cup.

But his contract with them is up in the summer, as he has NOT signed the new contract on offer, which would take him through to the 2018 World Cup.

COMPLICATIONS: AVB could find his career come to a standstill after his second high-profile sacking by an English club

It is understood Capello – who was working for Fox Sports during the Liverpool match – let the north Londoners know he wants to take Russia to Brazil next summer.

He said he was not interested in a job share similar to the one Guus Hiddink did, also when he was Russia boss, with Chelsea in the second half of the 2009-10 season.

Capello would remain committed to the Russians until after the World Cup, when he would switch to Spurs full time.

But before that the job is Sherwood’s to lose.

The 44-year-old technical co-ordinator and former Spurs favourite learned of his golden opportunity yesterday in a meeting with Levy after the club formally dispensed with AVB’s services following Sunday’s 5-0 mauling by Liverpool.

A statement about Villas-Boas said “the decision was by mutual consent and in the interests of all parties.”

After announcing the departure of AVB – who had this season and next left on his contract – Spurs confirmed Sherwood would be at the helm along with striker coach Les Ferdinand and coach Chris Ramsey.
