ALEX FERGUSON has warned Tottenham that star striker Wayne Rooney is now 'flying'.

Alex Ferguson: Wayne Rooney is flying

Ferguson has been struck by the United ace's vigour in pre-season and during the first game of the new campaign.

And this comes less than 12 months after the player's career was in turmoil.

Rooney had an awful World Cup last year, a poor start to the season and then tried to quit Old Trafford.

Fast forward to this summer and Rooney is ready to take the Premier League by storm again as Spurs could find out at Old Trafford tonight.

United boss Ferguson said: "Wayne has been flying in pre-season. His fitness is terrific.

"He has the same energy all the time. He is a restless player on the pitch.

"He never stands still and is a tremendous asset."

Rooney's turbulent first half of last season was replaced by a tremendous final four months which saw him finish the campaign with 16 goals and propel United to a record 19th title.

Without a major tournament this summer, he has been able to enjoy a proper rest and was explosive in pre-season in America.

Against Seattle Sounders, he scored a 21-minute hat-trick in a 7-0 win.

The player himself is revelling in the new role he took on in the second half of last season as he was given free reign to drop deep and create as well as score.

Rooney said: "That's where I like playing the most. It's where I finished last season and I was really enjoying it."

At 25, Rooney, is now one of the elder statesmen in a young squad after a number of retirements.

Rooney said: "If you look around our dressing room, now it's all of a sudden gone a lot younger.

"There are young players coming into the team now who have that desire and hunger to win trophies."

One of those youngsters is Danny Welbeck, 20, who Rooney played alongside in the Community Shield win over Manchester City.

The pair also teamed up for the opening day 2-1 victory over West Brom, with Rooney scoring the game's first goal.

But Ferguson is likely to go for Dimitar Berbatov against his old club tonight and still has Javier Hernandez to return after concussion.

Ferguson admits it gives him a selection headache.

He said: "It is interesting to see how well Rooney is combining with Welbeck.

"When Chicharito comes back, I have a selection problem. Chicharito has goals written all over him."

United take on a Spurs team fresh from a 5-0 Europa League win over Hearts last week.

Fergie said: "They had too much class for Hearts."
