BOCHUM, Germany (AP)—Borussia Moenchengladbach secured another season in the Bundesliga by coming from behind to earn a 1-1 draw at Bochum in the relegation playoff on Wednesday.

Marco Reus scored in the 72nd minute to cancel out an own goal from Borussia defender Havard Nordtveit in the 24th.

Moenchengladbach won the home leg of the two-match series 1-0 last week and clinched the series 2-1 on aggregate.

Moenchengladbach, which held bottom place for 20 rounds, finished strongly to claim 16th place in the Bundesliga in the final standings while Bochum was third in the second division.

“We started defending better,” said coach Lucien Favre, who took over in February when the team was seven points from safety.

Both teams hit the crossbar in the first half, which belonged to Bochum.

Nordweit put the ball into his own net as he tried to intercept a pass inside from Bochum’s captain Christoph Dabrowski.

Moenchengladbach stepped up the pressure in the second half and after hitting the post scored the equalizer thanks to substitute Igor de Camargo, who played a perfect through ball for Reus to score.

Reus had been doubtful until shortly before the match because of a hamstring injury. De Camargo scored the winning goal at home, also coming off the bench.

“We tried hard and hopefully we’ll get promoted next year,” Bochum coach Friedhelm Funkel said.

Funkel has won promotion six times, with different teams.

Once a powerhouse in German football, Moenchengladbach has been struggling for years. The club won five German championships and two UEFA Cup titles in the 1970s.
