Juventus' hopes of securing Champions League football suffered a setback as they lost 2-0 at relegation-threatened Lecce in a match which saw both sides reduced to 10 men.

Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was sent off in the 12th minute for handball outside the penalty area, and the hosts made use of their extra man to take control with goals from Djamel Mesbah and Andrea Bertolacci.

Giuseppe Vives' red card for second bookable offence midway through the second half evened up the numbers, but the Bianconeri could not restore parity in the scoreline.

After Buffon's early red card, issued after he smothered David Di Michele's shot having left the penalty box, Juve's task looked a tough one.

Di Michele volleyed wide before the visitors opened the scoring in the 32nd minute. Gianni Munari found Mesbah in an onside position and, after bringing it down with his chest, he slotted past replacement keeper Marco Storari.

Carlos Grossmuller missed a chance to double the lead five minutes later after a poor clearance from Frederic Sorensen, while Mesbah also failed to hit the target after being forced wide by Storari.

It took just three minutes of the second half for the next goal to come, Di Michele heading a long ball across goal for Bertolacci, who converted with ease.

Storari looked sharp again three minutes later when he recovered the ball well after Lecce failed to take advantage of a three-man overlap.

The visitors were struggling to create anything in attack and were instead forced to absorb more pressure when Grossmuller hit Davide Brivio's cross into the side-netting.

With the hour mark approaching Alessandro Del Piero headed wide with his side's best chance of the match, though their prospects briefly jumped when Vives earned a second yellow card for a tackle on Giorgio Chiellini.

They failed to take advantage of the even numbers, though, and could even have gone further behind when Ernesto Chevanton saw his overhead-kick sail just wide.
