Barcelona striker David Villa has expressed his relief at the rescue of 33 miners trapped in Chile and says that he is delighted that all of them are now safe.

Villa, himself a son of a miner, has been following the events in South America very closely and told Barca's official website that he is happy that the miners are now safe after being trapped underground for 69 days.

"I am proud and happy that they all stayed strong and that they are healthy," said Villa. "I have watched with uncertainty, hoping that everything would turn out well. It appears that the rescue equipment was perfect, but in these situations there could always be complications. I am pleased that it went so well and that they are all now back on the surface.

"In general I followed the rescue like everyone else did, but when you have lived in this world you are almost more sensitive about it because you know everything that it involves and memories come flooding back of events you know about. In this case we are all pleased that all the miners are safe and well."

The Spain international then went on to hail the miners for their courage.

"What they have done is not easy. They spent a long time down there, living together and helping each other so that it all turned out good. Thank God that everything turned out as well as it has done."

The 28-year-old also hopes that the events in Chile will now serve as a stern warning to the authorities and help improve the infrastructure in the mining industry.

"I have lived in mining area since I was young and the same things happen," said Villa. "I hope that this will ensure that improvements to the infrastructure are made and that nothing like this can happen again."
