I saved us from the hairdryer

DIMITAR BERBATOV hailed a magical day for himself and Manchester United as his treble rocked Liverpool.

But he also admitted he was fearing a full-on hairdryer blast from the boss after United surrendered a two-goal lead - just as they had at Everton the previous weekend.

The Bulgarian strike star said: "After being 2-0 up and letting it come back to 2-2, we knew the boss was going to be furious after the game."

Luckily for his team-mates, Berbatov completed the first United hat-trick in this clash for 64 years with an 83rd-minute headed winner.

He added: "It felt like a magical day, very special for me because I scored a hat-trick and we beat our rivals.

"Everyone is very happy in the dressing room.

"I will be going home with a smile on my face but to my kids I am nothing special - tomorrow is another day and Sunday is another game."

He was certainly something special to the United fans in a 75,213 Old Trafford crowd, who witnessed a thrilling second half.

It was Berbatov's best performance in a United shirt in what has been a prolific start to the season. He has bagged seven goals in six games, including the Community Shield.

He said: "It was probably my best performance for United but I don't want it to be the last.

"Hopefully, every game I will improve and everything will happen for me like it did today.

"It went through my mind that we had lost a two-goal lead the week before but, thankfully, we showed a fighting spirit.

"In future, when we go 2-0 up we should look to go 3-0. But we will keep improving. There is a long way to go and, hopefully, we will end up top."

Berbatov, 29, opened the scoring in the 42nd minute, heading home Ryan Giggs' corner.

His second goal 14 minutes after half-time was one of the most spectacular to be scored in front of the Stretford End.

Nani floated over a cross and Berbatov flicked the ball up with his knee before sending a spectacular overhead kick in off the bar.

He said: "I did not see the ball go in but when I heard the crowd screaming it was easy to guess what had happened.

"It was a good goal. But the ball was in the net and it does not matter whether it is an overhead kick or a tap-in."

Boss Alex Ferguson was impressed and said: "The second goal was unexpected, a surprise attempt.

"Not many of those end in the net but we are probably now beginning to see Dimitar believe in himself."
