Brown excited by Altidore

Hull manager Phil Brown believes there is plenty more to come from American striker Jozy Altidore after an impressive first start.

Altidore, on a season-long loan from Villarreal, marked his first 90 minutes for his new club with a goal in an ultimately comfortable 3-1 win over League One Southend in the Carling Cup.

The 19-year-old doubled Hull's lead with a powerful long-range strike after a superb early goal from debutant Tom Cairney at the KC Stadium.

Southend responded by pulling one back through Franck Moussa on the stroke of half-time but substitute Geovanni wrapped up the win after 75 minutes.

Brown said: "The biggest bonus of the night wasn't just the fact some young lads have made their debuts and done well, it was getting 90 minutes out of Jozy Altidore.

"He hit the winning goal and he's probably still suffering from jetlag having arrived on Friday.

"He played a full competitive game - and it was competitive, Southend were no slouches."

Brown was also impressed by the efforts of 18-year-old midfielder Cairney, who struck with a sublime left-footed lob after just seven minutes.

Brown added: "Tom is a goalscoring midfielder, one who could answer the questions from last season.

"Who knows how far he can go? He showed definite ability and definite awareness to play at league level."

Hull now go forward to the third round and Brown is likely to continue using the competition as a platform for fringe players.

He added: "The bottom line is it has been a good night at the office because of the win and the youthful exuberance of the team.

"It was important the young lads got some experience at first-team level.

"It gives us another opportunity to see the rest of the young lads that didn't play.

"They have given good pictures for me and I feel my squad is stronger."

Southend had their moments in a low-key tie played in front of just 7,995, a crowd of less than a third of the stadium's capacity.

Hull's extra quality eventually proved decisive but manager Steve Tilson found plenty of plusses ahead of the Shrimpers' return to league action.

Southend are still awaiting their first league win after drawing their opening four fixtures.

Tilson said: "I'm disappointed at the result but pleased with the performance.

"There were a lot of positives to take from the game.

"It was a good goal from Franck, great technique, and we created a couple more good chances.

"We probably created a lot more chances than them but that is the difference in quality, they put theirs away.

"We came out second half and had a really good spell before they scored but we needed to get that goal.

"It didn't quite drop for us. I'm proud of the way the boys played but disappointed we didn't get the result."
